This is a continuation of sketches started in 2004. A majority of my sketches are very much unplanned. Typically I am sitting at a pub enjoying a pint of beer with the sketchbook open. A few random lines turn into an image in my mind. I believe it is similar to sculptors talking about the material telling them what to carve. Whereas it is the stone's innate characteristics guiding the form for the sculptor, it is my subconscious mind shaping my own sketches. At some point my conscious mind takes over and I complete the details.

Circa 2004

This collection of sketches started when I visited Australia back in early September of 2004. Some of the sketches such as the two (2) statues come from time spent in the Victoria National Museum of Art in Melbourne. Others from time spent in Sydney. But a vast majority come from odd breaks during interpreting where I have a few odd minutes to sketch something. I find the opportunity to sketch allows my brain to rest ... and oddly therapeutic for times when I am working with rather unruly Japanese consultants (which is most of the time).

年賀状

年賀状 (nen-ga-jyo) are Japanese New Year cards. On occasion I will create them to send electronically to friends and family in Japan.

Circa 1990s

This collection of sketches come mostly from periods when I was in Japan; both in 1992-3 and 1995-6. While some of it is obviously influenced by my experiences in Japan, there are many pieces that are reflections of things occurring to my life back in the United States while I was abroad during these periods.
